... amateur vs. pro ...

This is definitely not the first time someone has debated out this, but I will give my own opinion on this as well.

Amateur or Professional Photographer, Clearly the world has been overrun with cameras. Build into nearly every device that you can buy, it has opened up a new way for people to capture memories and become amateur photographers.

As good as a mobile phone camera may be, you cannot compare it to a 24mp DSLR. Not all to long ago it was rather expensive for anyone to own a high end DSLR and it was easier to settle on a small digital camera to capture your holiday pictures or daily events.

Today you can buy a new or second hand DSLR for less then 1k. even though this may still be expensive for some, the possibility for everyone to buy one at an affordable price does exist. Which now opens up to be come a semi-pro photographer.

What is now the differentiation between a professional and a amateur?

Let me answer by telling you my own classification: I am a Professional Amateur.

No mater how good or bad your camera or gear may be, you always have loads of roam for improvement. You can take up a course at a college or even study photography and media at Uni. as beneficial as this may be, it is not the way it works for everyone. Some learn better by reading up information by themselves, some find it easier to watch YouTube videos and have someone explain the details to you and some just have a talent to take the camera and shoot pictures.

Not to insult someone that has studied years and is ultra-pro at photography, but you can also reach those heights by just spending time with your camera. If you want to know more feel free to get in touch.

... nature, and I ...

… or how did I start with photography!

Since my first post I have been wanting to share about one of my passions. Wildlife photography.

Just about one year ago me and my family have unexpectedly lost our brother. He lived back home in Germany, whilst I stay in Scotland. Due too the distance I was finding it difficult to connect with the loss and grieve. Even at the funeral it was a struggle to let him go, as it seems like nothing yet has changed.

When I came back home from the funeral in Germany, I stared to go for long walks, in town, forests and highlands. It helped me to work out some of the emotions that I was struggling with.

As I was walking, I realised a lot about my surroundings, the details of beautiful colours, patterns and rare moments in which you can watch a small bird, otter or fox. I decided to bring along my small camera and shortly after bough my first DSLR.

I have spent hours upon hours in a photo-hide, waiting for the moment to finally have the opportunity and fire of the shutter.

Those moments of silence, peace and bare nature, helped me overcome stress, grieve and let me find and grow passion for my surroundings.

If you have been through similar circumstances or have questions please feel free to contact me directly.

... the future is the past ...

How many times do you say “I wish I was young again"!, or you have a day you just feel older and would love to be a child again?

Being able to look back is emotionally impacting if you can hold a picture of a memory in your hand to proof that time has past.

One of my fondest memories is about my family dog Bailey. I grew up with her from a fairly young age and we lost her when I turned 20. Your Pet is your friend and you build a relationship to them and connect emotions to them as well. The picture is taken by my mum. Bailey and I, are sitting on our porch and wear silly top-hats. When I look at the picture I feel different emotions. I wish I was young again, feeling the loss of a dear pet, a time of when my family was still a complete number, no loss of life and I wish to have that top-hat again to take a picture with it now.

But sadly I' don’t even have the picture anymore either.

I do have another one with Bailey and every time I look at the picture below, I remember the one with our silly top-hats.

My memory comes from a picture of another picture.

Make a memory now and take a picture of it, so you can look back in time.

... and so it begins ...

Not all to long ago I was debating with myself if I should get a new camera. I was looking for something new to learn and a way to leave the house and office more frequently. I bought myself the Canon EOS 2000D DSLR and a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens. I signed up to a RSPB resort membership and started using their Photo-hide. Soon enough, I realised that I outgrew the settings of my 2000D and started to look into more complex models. I read a lot of reviews (as you do), and narrowed my search down to the Canon EOS 80D. I cannot describe the childlike joy and fascination I portrayed, when I received my new 80D. The possibilities seemed endless to me. I upgraded my lens shortly after, as I wanted to capture long distance shoots. I looked up reviews and decided to get myself the Sigma 150-600 mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary C. Up until today I have no regrets in my investment and research. I could have maybe gone with Tamron, but here I simply stop and say, everyone to their own budget.

I started to enjoy wildlife Photography now even more and developed my techniques and learned a lot about my new setup.

It was only shortly after I published my first pictures, that a friend of mine asked me if I did’t want to consider photography as profession. naturally I love arts and grew up playing several instruments, done drawing and painting and writing before, but I simply answered “No”. I did not think that I would enjoy photography as much over time.

Over the upcoming months I had a chance to take pictures of friends, family and also build up a group of clients. Slowly I started to realise that I was already running a business and that I enjoyed it far to much to stop now.

What will the future look like:

The Past will be the future, ..
